“She was unbelievably thick-skinned, one of the most unlikable people I’ve met. Everybody could see through her — except Sid.” 

 

On October 12 1978, A twenty year old woman was found dead slouched under a bathroom sink. She had been stabbed only once by a five inch blade and had slowly bled to death on the bathroom floor. Dying half naked besides a toilet was hardly glamorous, But it was almost fitting considering that most of her life could be described as far from glamorous. Her life was short but intense, exciting though excessive. But more than anything else, her life was driven by her need to self destruct. A need that seemed to start from birth. 

 

Nancy Laura Spungen was born on on February 27 1958 with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. It was a dramatic entrance into the world (Where Nancy almost died of oxygen deprivation) and seemed to foretell what kind of a child Nancy was going to be: difficult and dramatic. At age three months, she was given a liquid barbiturate to try to control her tantrums and violence. At age four, she saw her first psychiatrist. She was often violent towards her siblings and also threatened to kill her babysitter, tried to attack a psychiatrist and chased her mother with a hammer. The violence progressively got worse as she grew older. Despite her difficult behavior, She showed a superior intellect and excelled academically. Until the age of eleven when she was expelled for skipping school.  

 

At this point, Nancy’s parents could no longer handle her erratic and worsening behavior and enrolled her to Devereux Glenholme School (A therapeutic boarding school) hoping it would help Nancy. However while at Devereux Glenholme, Nancy: tried drugs at aged just thirteen, ran away and tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrists with scissors at the age of fifteen. She also was diagnosed her with schizophrenia during her stay. Despite her behavior, She was remained student at Devereux Glenholme and Devereux Glenholme High until she graduated at age sixteen. 

 

After High-school, she applied to the University of Colorado at Boulder and was accepted. She was there for five months but was expelled after being arrested twice for stealing from other students and buying marijuana from an undercover police officer. Nancy’s father traveled to Boulder to accept a plea bargain. resulting in Nancy being banished from the state of Colorado and her being brought home. She didn’t stay with her parents long as they discovered that she had been stealing from them and selling drugs to support herself and fund her growing heroin addiction. 

 

At seventeen she moved to New York where she stripped, prostituted herself, shot up and followed bands like Aerosmith, The New York Dolls and The Ramones. She was determined to be a rock band groupie no matter what the cost. So much so that she moved to London just to pursue New York Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan. She didn’t meet Nolan but instead met an up and coming punk band; The Sex Pistols.

The Movie Sid and Nancy and many of their fans would like to think that Sid and Nancy saw each other instantly and knew they would be soul mates. In reality, Nancy tried it on with a few members of the band before she settled for Sid Vicious. Sid was a surly rude little boy which suited Nancy perfectly. She needed someone to boss around and Sid needed someone to boss him about. Sid was also a drug user like Nancy. Nancy introduced him into heroin and also took his virginity, intensifying their relationship with addictive drugs and sex. They quickly became inseparable and their codependent relationship started to dominate the rest of their lives. 

Sid’s band mates hated Nancy and her influence over Sid. They hung her out windows by her feet and kidnapped and abandoned her in the middle of nowhere just to be rid of her. Yet  “Nauseating Nancy” would never go away. In desperation, The Pistols went on a make or break tour of America, leaving Nancy in London and away from Sid. But Sid no longer cared about anything other than Nancy and heroin. The tour was a disaster. Shortly afterwards the Sex Pistols split up and Sid and Nancy moved to The Chelsea Hotel in New York.

 

In New York, Nancy attempted to manage Sid’s solo career but quickly discovered how talent-less he really was. In any case, Most of the time he was too high on drugs to hold a guitar let alone play one. Their drug addiction increased and they started to beat each other on a regular basis. Despite Nancy’s tantrums and use of violence, she normally came off the worst in this fights and was constantly covered in scars, bruises and cigarette burns. On the night of October 11 and the early hours of October 12, 1978 Sid and Nancy had their last fight which resulted in the murder of Nancy Spungen. 

 

 

Whatever exactly happened in room 100 of the Chelsea Hotel will forever remain a mystery. however we do know that Nancy died there and we do know that Sid confessed to killing Nancy. When He was arrested he was inconsolable and was desperate to be released to attend Nancy’s funeral. The Spungen’s refused to allow Vicious to attend the funeral. The Spungen’s further erased all traces of Punk from Nancy as they dressed her in her green high-school prom dress, took off her make-up and dyed her hair back to it’s original brown. She was buried in the King David Memorial Park. 

 

 

Nancy’s life was much like her relationship with Sid; turbulent and intense and in your face. Their relationship consumed their whole lives and in the end took them. Nancy died on the bathroom floor and Sid died a few months later of a heroin overdose because he couldn’t continue to live without Nancy. His suicide note read: 

 

“We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby. Bury me in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye”

 

Sid’s ashes were scattered over Nancy’s grave.
